This historic structure, built in 1925, is one of the last
remaining buildings of Greek Classical Revival Architecture
still standing in North Carolina. It served more than
6,000 students in the 69 years it was used as a school.
It is the only auditorium of its size in the area available for
public use. Presently it is being used for local drama productions,
pageants, NC Symphony concerts, private lectures, conferences,
public concerts and events. Since 1988 the organization (Preservation
of the Grainger Complex, Inc.) has raised more than $400,000 that has
been used to keep the building open for public use. Renovations include
a permanent sound and lighting system, new stage curtains, and expansion
of lobby space and restrooms.
Funds are now being sought to continue to upgrade and refurbish the facility to
its original grandeur. Needs include installing an
air conditioning system, new cushioned seating throughout the auditorium,
stage and fly space renovations and extensive decorating.
The Preservation Group is a 501 (c) (3) corporation.
